City walls and catapults

City walls are the most important factor next to the units which will contribute to your city defenses. Many players when attacking ignore the power that walls add to total defense so please let me explain how important they are and if you are the attacking side, how important it is to send catapults with your attacks.

Basically with walls lvl 25 if one hits 100 swordsmen he/she actually hits 242 swordsmen. Lvl 25 walls add extra 142% for every unit in the city! So with the Tower it can be even 152% extra (252% in total) against an attacker.

Tower adds 10% and lvl 25 walls add 142% = 152%
but if you count the whole defense you must multiply it by 252% (2,52) because its 100% (swordsmen) + 152% (extra)

If you have 100 swordsmen, lvl 25 walls and the Tower it will be 100 swordsmen times 2,52 = 252 swordsmen.
If a guy has lvl 25 walls and 500 swordsmen, 300 archers and 400 hoplites, then he actually has 2,42 times more of them so 1210 swordsmen, 726 archers and 968 hoplites.

Lower City Wall by 10 lvls and its only an extra 70%.

These are extra % not some constant extra few units, so the more units they have the bigger the difference gets. 1000 swordsmen will change into 2420 swordsmen!!! You can say goodbye to few of your slingers nukes.

Recommendations
Therefore your priority is to add catapults to your first land attacks. If your enemy dodge then happy time, as you have just taken out lots of units for free!!! (using our example it would be like killing 710 swordsmen, 426 archers and 568 hoplites). Its called dodge tax - when enemy dodges your clearing waves he will pay for it by loosing walls and trust me, it hurts.

There is no magic number here, everything depends on proportions (how many defensive units they have when you hit) but as a rule of thumb have like 20-50 catapults with each 1000 slingers.

If a guy has lots of defensive units there (few thousands), DO NOT attack it - you will be wiped and even 50 catapults wont help, you will lower the walls lvl only by 1 or 2 or maybe even 0. If you are stubborn and have millions of troops to waste then quake it many times to lower walls as much as possible. I personally like to send my troops straight away to his other cities to destroy walls over there :D

Catapults are very bad fighters and should be treated as something to be escorted (by slingers for example) so don't send catapults alone or with little escort. Basically while attack units fight with defensive units, catapults spend their time destroying walls. No escort = all catapults killed and 0 walls destroyed.

If you keep banging the same city and not destroying the guys walls then you keep wasting your units. He/she is buffed every time you hit - take that shield out every time you can!

  1. Can you put the percents for each wall level? Such as level 1 wall = --%.

  6. About how strong is the defense of a city. ex. attack a city with a swordsman that doesn't have a wall or units but you still lose the swordsman.

  7. Defense value of a city without walls is minimal, almost non-existant. Never attack cities with defensive units (swordsman, archer, pegasi or centaur). I think that if you attack an empty city you might lose like 1-2 units total, as long as these are mentioned above swords, archers or maybe even hoplites.

  8. Does the the level of the city wall count for the conquerors units as well, once he is in and becomes the defender?

    1. If you have a CS in an enemy's city, it effectively becomes 'your's' in that any support sent to it will help you and any attacks sent against it will hurt you. Therefore I assume walls work the same way. I haven't tested it (checked reports) but it should be that way. So if there are no units defending a city or their number is really small you can leave walls when conquering it.

    2. Thats exactly what i was thinking, but i had to know for sure, unfortunatelly i dont have any reports at the moments, thanks for the reply.

    3. Yeah the best way to know it for sure is to check battle reports. Put them into the simulator and see if you get the same result with walls switched on. I'm almost sure that they do help you during a siege, if not I would be surprised.

    4. the wall does help you in the event of a siege which is why you shouldn't send your cats with a CS. All that does is reduce your defence as it doesn't make it any easier for your OU to get in. Send the cats in your clearing waves instead - at least you get the benefit of them, not just your enemy

  9. would you say a tower is worth 60 population? i feel like you could use those 60 population to make more units or upgrade your other buildings. what do you think?

    1. Tower adds defensive strength of your land and naval units by 10%.
Is it worth it? Well yes if you defend with Biremes and Land Units and need to constantly defend this city.

Example: If you have 1000 Swordsmen behind lvl 0 walls,
it will give you 14 000 Blunt Defense.
Now you can add 60 more swordsmen, which will give you 14840,
or Tower and have 15 400

on top of that extra 10% for Biremes.

However if you dont have to defend this city, then every day without fight is a wasted bonus.

You have choice between Tower and Divine Statue, Oracle, Merchant's Shop.
If you go for the Statue you will get a little bit more Favour Points:
How much? 1 temple lvl 25 produces 5 FPs per hr. With the Statue it will produce 5.5 FPs. Over a day it is 131 FPs instead of 120, over a week it is 920 instead of 840. These extra 80 FPs is 1 extra Population Growth per week, no matter if you are being attacked or not and it is just from 1 temple.
If you had two lvl 25 temples and Statue in both, the difference would be 113 FPs.

While with Tower you are wasting boost everyday that you are not being attacked, then with the Statue you get some extra FPs which you will be using all the time.
FPs can be used for spells and boosts whenever and wherever you need them (so it is flexible not like Tower rooted in 1 city). If you dont have to use spells then you can always start producing Mythical units. FPs should never go to waste.

So ask yourself do you need this Tower that much in this city?

    2. PS
options of upgrading buildings or investing FS in different kind of units are impossible to discuss.
The bottom line is that Tower is very situational. Even when you really need it, that situation will at some point change and then you have to include costs of reallocating FPs (you will not need Tower forever in this place), so basically costs of building it and then building something different.

  10. just wanted to ask if its worth building manticores in revolt world.i had played in a conquest world and a nuke of 60 manti is the best thing you can have, but then i had to dedicate half of my cities to zeus and have lvl 25 temple with statues in several.it was wothy in breaking seiges, but are they that awesome in revolt worlds?
P.S. thanks to the guides and some other players i am having 10 cities in my 1st ever grepo game :D

    1. Hi,
I have never properly played revolt world so please mind that my experience is very limited here. Manticore nuke can be used for clearing a city before you land your CS – after all it is still one of the strongest nukes in the game (as long as defender does not have many archers or centaurs there).

Now, if it is worth dedicating half of your cities for that 1 super attack force? This is totally different discussion but personally I do not think so. In my opinion it is an awesome power but 1 battle will not win war for you. Is it not better to boost all your land and navy attacks and speed up production speed instead? Manticores nuke as a luxury – if you have time and resources go for it but if you are for a long war, just forget it – focus on basics.
